Great things can come out of commercial and artsy collaborations! The latest interactive music video for Aloe Blacc initiated by Lincoln Motor Company (also responsible for Beck’s Hello Again extravaganza) and directed by Radical Friend, is proof of this. The concept is quite simple: choose to follow one of the four different perspectives ( of singer Aloe, of dancers Leo and Hannah, or of the producer Nick), each resulting in a spectacularly choreographed one shot music video, or go for the director’s cut and see how the story-lines actually mix. Exploring the individual narratives is actually very rewarding (even though the switch between them is not particularly friendly, and jumps back and forth in the song are not possible, just as it was happening in Bob Dylan’s interactive vid, done with the same Interlude technology) as it allows also some shifts in sound perspective as well, beside the unique story of each character. Aloe is at one time in an elevator and during the ride, we hear him singing a cappella. As soon as the doors open however, the instruments resume. In the same way, when he is in front of a microphone, the sound design changes!
